There’s something about starting a Sunday with salty skin and bare feet that just feels right. On May 18th, we gathered with our Marnie Rays community at Highcliffe in Cornwall to mark the beginning of summer in the most soul-soothing way we know how: with the sea, connection, and a sprinkle of cinematic magic.
Our first-ever Cornwall event, Sunday Salt Session, felt like one big exhale. We walked down to the ocean for a refreshing dip in our J.Crew swimsuits, rinsed off the salt and sand, and came together to share lunch by Gather Around Food, sip drinks by Pentire, and watch Alice Rose Ward’s stunning film SALT, screened in Cornwall for the very first time. Goodie bags were tucked under arms, conversations flowed, and the atmosphere was filled with ease and warmth.
But beyond the swims, the film, or the food, what made the day truly special was the feeling in the air, something that’s hard to articulate but easy to recognise when you’re in it. It was women showing up exactly as they were, no pretence, no pressure… just presence. A shared sense of slowing down, of being held in the company of others who value the same things: simplicity, nature, joy, and real conversation.
At Marnie Rays, we’ve never just been about surf and wellness on the surface. We’re about the undercurrent, the spaces in between. About creating experiences that allow you to soften into who you really are. And on Sunday, that intention came to life. You could feel it in the conversations flowing over Pentire drinks, in the quiet pauses between swims, in the laughter that rippled across the group in the sunshine.
These gatherings aren’t about big showy moments, they’re about the real stuff: catching someone’s eye and feeling instantly understood, chatting with someone you’ve never met and realising you’re not alone in what you’re navigating, soaking in the ocean and feeling like you’ve come back to yourself a little.
Numbers were exchanged. Surfs were planned. New friendships sparked with ease without the awkwardness, without the noise.
When women come together like this - grounded, open, unguarded - there’s something undeniably powerful about it. Not performative, not curated, just honest. We walked away from Sunday with salty hair and sandy toes, but more than that with a sense of being recharged in ways that don’t come from ticking boxes or doing more.
Marnie Rays has always been about more than just surf and wellness. It’s about creating spaces where women feel seen and supported, where confidence is built not through perfection, but through presence and participation. Where a paddle out can be just as transformative as a heart-to-heart on the sand.
This is what community looks like. This is what we’re building. It isn’t loud or complicated. It’s built slowly, quietly, through shared experiences that make you feel less alone and more like yourself.
And if Sunday was anything to go by, shared swims, honest chats, new surf plans and soulful connection, we’re just getting started.
loads of love,
The Marnie Rays team 🌊
