Q&A with Lindsey Holland

What was the moment or feeling that made you say, β€œI need to do this”?

I was going through a tough time in my life - a heartbreak, struggling to find my joy again, and feeling incredibly lost. Despite growing up in a small town in Stockport, UK, I’ve always had a deep connection to the water. During this period, I swam every day to try and find some peace. I realised that the best way forward was to sit with the hard feelings, but I didn’t feel equipped to do that at home. I had recently fallen in love with solo travel, and so I decided to go somewhere I could face this challenge on my own. When researching, I kept coming across β€œsurf retreats,” and it felt like the perfect fit. So, off I went to learn to surf for the first time. That experience changed everything. I found my joy again, made lifelong friends, and connected with the water in a way I didn’t know was possible. The idea for Marnie Rays came to me during a solo surf trip to Hawaii. While journaling in a special spot, I realised that the joy, peace, and community I had discovered on that surf retreat was something I needed to share with others. That’s when I knew I had to launch Marnie Rays.

Where did the name Marnie Rays come from, and what does it represent?

Naming Marnie Rays was a fun but long journey! I’ve always loved the word "Ray," like sun ray, and then I stumbled upon a trailblazing surf woman from the 70s named Marnie. It felt like a perfect fit. Marnie means "sparkle on the sea," which resonated with the energy I wanted to create. I also love how both the team and guests shorten it to β€œMarnie’s” - it feels like home.

What does surfing give you beyond just a sport? How does it impact your mind, body, and heart?

Surfing has transformed my life. It’s taught me patience and has brought me peace during the most anxious times. When I surf, my mind is clear, nothing else matters. It’s such a rare gift in a world full of distractions. Surfing keeps me fit and healthy, but it’s not without its frustrations and challenges. I’ve got a few scars now, but they’re a badge of honor! I’ve worked hard, and the ocean has worked harder.

Was there a time when you thought, β€œThis is why I do this”? A memory, a person, or a breakthrough that made it all feel right?

I get this feeling every week. I know I’m doing something deeply aligned with my purpose when I’m either receiving feedback from peers in the surf industry or getting approached by brands I admire for collaborations. When I’m running retreats, I can’t help but tear up every single day. Watching people form connections, make breakthroughs, and bond in the water is so rewarding - it truly makes everything worthwhile.

What’s been the biggest challenge of running Marnie Rays, and how have you navigated it?
